Starting an Adult Day Care Business
Opening an adult day care business is fast and it also gets quick money. Everyone needs some space and time to spare with his/her own interest hence they leave their dependent with a day care, hence day care business is on high demand these days.
An adult day care center, like a children?s day care center, is first and foremost a business venture. In some states, an adult day care center or senior citizens day care center can be operated right inside one?s home.
Many homeowners are sharing their domicile with the elderly because the return on investments is quick and great. If you are deciding to put up such a business, this is a basic checklist before you even set up your business.
First, health officials will check the state of your house or prospective business place. It must meet sanitation and basic health standards (i.e. fire exits and gas installations.) It also gives the health officials a clue as to how many patrons you can accommodate at a given time. Second, you have to pass the necessary background check. Third, you need to apply for an adult daycare center license. Fourth, you must apply for a food handler's permit. You must be versed with city rules and regulations, particularly local laws regarding the operation of your business – and this amounts to boxes and boxes of paperwork. You can base your charge according to your overhead expenses, and compare them with other adult day care centers in the neighborhood. Set competitive prices.
So, finally, after all the pre-business necessities taken care of, you are now ready to open your own adult daycare center. An adult daycare center should run like clockwork. It is not a product that you are selling, but rather a service that may acquire you a good reputation and more patrons. A safe, friendly atmosphere is not very difficult to acquire; it just needs a more people-friendly orientation and personal attention to each and every patron. Your patrons are elderly people who may have difficulty looking after themselves. You may want to acquaint yourself with their personalities, medical history, food preferences, dietary needs, etc.

Your main priority is to keep your patrons happy, healthy, and comfortable. Hiring staff is essential. If you are starting this business with only your family as help, you may be required to learn basic caretaking lessons and basic first-aid. Otherwise, try to hire people who have experience working with the elderly before. Previous training is essential because the elderly have ultimately far different needs than those of children or of healthy adults. Also, staff members who have previous experience may give you helpful inputs as to how to run a smoother operation. In any case, you may also want to ask your first few patrons what they would want while they are staying with you. Inputs from your patrons’ family members may also be helpful, especially if they have availed of the same service from other such businesses.
Like everyone else, the elderly need a cheerful, happy environment. Arrange to have a bit of entertainment while they are there. It doesn’t have to be a grand bingo bonanza or a Las Vegas trip every day; simple activities like book reading or learning new songs will suffice as part of their daily activities. Some elderly people might like sedate activities like knitting or TV watching or chess playing. Special “trips” outside your home or business establishment may be done once in a while – but that too needs special arrangements and preparation. If you can work around your budget, then do so. Entertainment need not be grand. Be creative and ask your patrons what they would like to do while they are there. Their answers may be surprising, but helpful.
Be extra mindful with their diet. The elderly have special diets, especially those who are taking prescription medicines. Some may have medical conditions – so be extra mindful about what they want. Healthy food like fresh fruits and vegetables is always good if your patrons still have their teeth with them.

@Deborah. The first thing we need to do is inquire as to whether or not you are required to obtain state licensure. The second step is to design a business plan that will include the services and activities you wish to provide. You must plan the staff members you will need as well as the size of the location to know how many participants you can have. When it comes to funding, you can seek a private investor, or SBA. I do have Clients that are still in process of acquiring funding for other businesses as this has become a hard task to accomplish. In today's economy, not everyone (more specifically banks) are willing to freely provide investment dollars for people to start businesses. When it comes to classes, you can begin by taking Home Health Aide courses, and similar courses so that you can gain experience working with patients. If not, you can always hire someone who meets the criteria as your ADCC administrator. Feel free to give me a call if you have further questions on the matter. I wish you luck!

@Elizabeth Dreyfuss. Hello Elizabeth. Where exactly is Palm Springs located? I need to know the State. Unfortunately, most States do not allow you to open Adult Day Cares in residential locations unless it is accompanied by an Assisted Living Facility license. Different states will have different names for these businesses. So first thing you need to do, is contact your local state regulatory agency so that you may find out if a residential location is allowed. Our office can gather the information for you as well as assist you through the process. We are a phone call away. Allow us to save you time and money.

To everyone looking for advice on starting your own Adult Day Care Center or Group Home, there are a lot of regulations that have to be met such as depending on the state, you may not be able to start an Adult Day Care Center from a residential location unless it is attached to an ALF, or Group Home, or something similar. Feel free to call me for details of our fees and general questions. I wish everyone great luck in their projects!

@ Ceceila - Good morning... Ceceila, Miami Gardens is an ALF saturated location. There is a rule across Dade County that does not allow an ALF to open within 1000 feet distance of another. This is measured on a radius. I don't believe you must acquire AHCA licensure, since it is only for 2 beds. I believe AHCA licensure is for 4 beds and above. Do not quote me on that because remember that we consult in the whole country for various different businesses so I would need to verify with my team. However, if you wish to not acquire the help of a consultant, you can find out with AHCA if you will need their license afterall. By housing however, it seems you are referring to having 2 people live there. This puts you in the ALF (Assisted Living Facility) license. Not an ADCC (Adult Day Care License) as ADCCs can only have participants no more than 8 hours each day and they are Monday-Friday. Let us know if you have further questions so that we may be properly assist you. Good Luck!!

@John... I believe licensing has a moratorium for ADCCs in New Jersey. We would need to double check tomorrow to confirm. If not, feel free to call our office so that we may assist you in the process of receiving licensure. Good luck!

@Sharon Fuller, Hi Sharon, in order to get the adult day care up and running you need to develop activity programs to implement for the participants, develop and implement policies and procedures, develop forms to use for clinical and HR files, and develop logs for data collection. We are available to help you with the start-up process and make sure you save time and money. I look forward to hearing from you soon. As always, I wish you luck in your endeavor.

@Hilery Fleureny, Hello Hilery, the only way to find clients for your business is by continuous marketing. Getting to know the people in your community (i.e. casemanagers, physicians, hospitals, low-cincome and retirement buildings, etc.) Good luck with your business, let me know how it goes with the marketing.
