I want to bring something innovative and new to this area as well as giving customers what they want and need. My goal is to bring a line of beauty supplies and products that no one can resist.     I am so interested in starting my hair care business. I've been making herbal oil, mudd washes, hair grease/glee, body butters and hair gels for approximately 1 year. Everyone I've given a sample to has suggested I start my own business - they love the sample products, my knowledge of hair and my knowledge of herbs/organic materials. I have even formulated a medicinal chest rub. I've come up with a company name, label designed and am always open to learn new things. Opening a hair care business is a bit scary but I welcome the challenge. Of course, I can read books and Internet articles all day but nothing beats learning hand-on from an expert in the field. My price range will be mid-mid/high dependent on style. I'm in desperate need of assistance with how on earth to calculate projections!! How many styles would a store buy from a newbie: 5 or 50?? What can I expect to make if I attack the market aggressively, etc...
    The second (-and probably the biggest issue is how to find a high quality reasonably priced manufacturer? I also need to stock up on sample materials to create my designs. Is there a hub of information for this kind of stuff? If so where??
    Lastly, what must I bring to a sales pitch (-obviously samples, but how many, sizes, materials, catalogues, anything from a technical perspective? What will buyers want to know...etc...

    @JDRichards, there are several contract manufacturing companies that might work with you. One that I've worked with before is GDMI (www.gdmiinc.com). They can do small runs and even help with formulation work. Finding investors can be tough. As good as your products may be, no one is going to believe in them as strongly as you do. And because you can't patent hair care formulations, there is no intellectual property to justify an investment - it's all speculative. The best place to raise funds is friends, family and, if your credit is strong, an SBA loan.
