Germany pushes for 1M Electric vehicles by 2020

The German government on Thursday officially announced its “national electro-mobility plan” which aimed to put some one million electric vehicles on its streets and highways.

The government, under the resolution signed by the cabinet, will provide incentives for research and development of both BMW and Volkswagen.

In a bid to push forward the development of new electric vehicles, the German government on Thursday announced plans to put some one million electric vehicles in its streets by 2020 which will be made by local-based BMW and Volkswagen.

According to reports, the “national electro-mobility plan” of the government will help jumpstart the two German automakers’ bid for the supremacy in the electric-vehicle market.

“As we all know, the electric vehicle market is dominated by Asian automakers. The electro-mobility master plan aims to give incentives to BMW and Volkswagen to start their research and development for the technology,” a cabinet member was quoted saying.

He added that by 2020, there will be at least a million electric vehicles in the capitals, streets, and highways of Germany. And by 2030, he said that there could be more than five million electric cars in the country.

The cabinet member also said that forty years from now, Germany will be free from the use of fossil fuels in its vehicles.

One of the main goals of the electro-mobility plan is to spark the research and development for longer battery life and better charging systems in the country.

Germany was among the last countries with auto-making expertise to develop electric cars despite having one of the best technologies to work for its development. Based on records, Japan and the US have the most number of electric vehicles in the world.
