Things You Should Know
It is important that you learn about the animal before you consider taking care of one. These animals are curious, gentle, and alert. You can raise it together with other animals and you don’t have to worry about them. Unlike other animals, the Llama is odorless and clean. You can house this animal with ease and you can even train them to pull small carts. If you love hiking or jogging, Llama makes a great companion when you are in the outdoors. You get to choose your preferred color and enjoy the soft attractive wool. Regardless of the climate or weather condition, the animal can adapt and are usually resistant to diseases.
The Physical Characteristics
The Llama can reach a height of 60-72 inches and a mature animal can weight 250-300 pounds. Female Llamas reach their maturity in two years and the male at three years. If you have kids, you should get the baby Llama and it will grow with your kids. You see, Llamas can live for 20-25 years! The ears of the animal are curved and large, and it has large eyes that compliment its small head. The wool is a bit long and can reach about 8 inches and unlike the wool of sheep, it is not water resistant. You can choose among different colors like white, black, red, brown, or combinations.
Nutrition and Feeding
When it comes to feeding, you have unlimited choices. You can opt for combinations of commercial supplements, concentrates, and roughages. It is important that you give Llamas the right balance of nutrition. You have to establish a feeding schedule and once the animal reaches maturity, you have to be extra cautious because your pet may become fat.
Llamas live in herds and you have to make sure that it has animal companions. If you don’t have another Llama, you can take care of a dog, horse, pig, sheep, or goat. A Llama can be very useful especially if you’re traveling through mountains. It can carry about 1/3 of their weight. It can also serve as your livestock’s guardian. All you have to do is train your Llama and you can depend on it even if you’re not around.
