Starting a Mobile Ice Cream Truck Business

A mobile ice cream truck business is a new business idea. It is a profitable kind of business, especially during summer. There are some points that you need to remember when venturing into this kind of business.

This includes setting up your budget, buying a reliable mobile truck and equipment, putting up marketing flyers, fixing licenses, costing, and establishing a truck route for customers.

A mobile ice cream truck business is a good choice if you want something new for a business enterprise. Aside from the fact that you only need a little capital, you may choose to run this mobile ice cream truck on a seasonal basis especially during summertime. Since your business is a mobile truck, there is no specific location for it but you could let it pass by highly populated areas like mall fronts, parks, schools, and beaches. You could also convert your mobile ice cream truck into an ice cream stand. Compared to an ice cream stand, mobile ice cream truck has a lot of benefits. This is much better than a store with a fixed location because you can certainly transport your products to place where it is highly in demand. Of course, the profit has a huge potential to grow especially during peak season.

Key points when starting a mobile Ice cream truck business

When you decide to venture into the mobile ice cream truck business, it is very exciting and interesting. If you know the key factors in running this kind of business, then this could lead to a lucrative endeavor. As a business owner, you need to be in high spirits. A good and carefully thought about the business plan can definitely serve as your guide.

The first thing that you need to do before starting this business is fixing everything first. Consider the budget that you have so that you have an idea of how much you are working on. If you know your budget well, then you can consider buying quality equipment needed for your mobile store. Of course, the ice cream truck is considered to be your priority. Know the size, gas mileage, and the space that is needed for storage. It will be best if you can look for a custom-built truck that is specifically made for your business. The classified ads are a great place to search for trucks whether it is a new one or second hand. Remember that the truck needs to have a big sign with your store’s name on it. Make sure that it is eye-catching.

The next things to consider are the licenses that you need when it comes to operating an ice cream truck business. Remember that you need to consult with your local government because the policies and laws vary when it comes to the area. There are also rules when it comes to operating motor vehicles. Don’t forget about this because your entire business clearly revolves around your mobile truck. Since you are in the food industry the health department has certain regulations when it comes to food handling. Remember to make sure that everything is sanitized and follow the health standards.

The next thing that you have to do is to understand the cost and compared it to your profit. This will determine the pricing of your ice cream. This may be a hard task so it will be best if you read about books related to business or you could even take a short course regarding small business operation.

Since you are operating a mobile truck, you need to establish a week route where you can find people in these places that may want ice cream. It will be nice if these customers can expect you on a regular basis.

My family owns a Ice Cream Business, we deliver to schools, stores, and have about 3Van's that have been converted into an ice cream van, and an OLD TIMey Ice cream truck, one of the originals. I drive one of the vans, and it is a wonderful business if you can stand the heat! I do pretty well and have established my route, and my regulars come out almost everyday to see me. Right now I hold the title most profit's sold out of all the drivers. They always ask me how I do it. Here's my secret!

I load up my truck, and fill up with gas every night, in to mornings when school is out, I start my route at 10am, I bring drinks for myself, (water & sprite) and I bring something to eat so I am not constantly stopping at stores, or stopping to get something to eat. I'm steadily on my route until it gets dark, sometimes it is past dark when I am still selling when I am in a neighborhood. I don't turn my music off when I am waiting on customers, it lets others know I'm still in the same area and they are out waiting on me, The best time to make profit is in the evening when it's cooler, but the money you make before hand adds up also. In the month of March I made a little over 6,000.00! It's a wonderful business! I love it, and I love love love the kids, they are so cute trying to say Sponge BoB! ;) Good Luck EVERYONE. The Ice Cream Lady

My husband & I hav started a mobile ice cream truck this year!!! So far so good!!! Also, make sure to find a truck w/air. We found a great truck (visually) for a reasonable price. But buyer BEWARE we had to get some work done & we stil have no air!!! As another poster said above, if you can handle the heat it's a great business. Also, don't think everyday is going to be a GREAT day!!! Some days, you'll sell out, most you won't!!! The main thing is keep going!!! Develop a route & stick to it. Some spots we've went to & sold great 1 time, then every time after that, it's been awful!!! But, you just keep rolling & playing that song everyone loves to hear!!! It'll pay off!! Good luck & best wishes to you all!

I am considering opening a new icecream truck business but instead of a motor vehicle the whole operation will be based off of a pontoon boat in bay that is generally filled with some 10,000 boats from march till june. It seems like a great idea and I have not seen anyone on the water doing the same operation (i.e. no competition!) I was just wondering where to look for business partners that have a good background on starting the operation or where a good place to start the research and set up would be. Any information is most appreciated. Thank you!

  • Riley McClendon said on August 16, 2014
Hi, My name is Riley and I have been selling Ice cream in Michigan for the past 7 years, yes this type of business is very profitable. So let me share with you all I know about an ice cream truck businesses.

First you must have patience! Why? because kids and some adults will take what seems forever to select a ice cream bar. Now a far as equipment concerning stop sign, music box flashing lights all can be purchased online, when buying a truck height size does matter. Why? Well do the math 5ft ceiling does not work for a 5/7 or 6ft man or woman getting up and down for the driver seat 8hr or more throughout the day.. back pain back pain!!!

Next lets talk about freezers! When it comes to a freezer we are talking about prepackaged ice cream bars not soft serve, we will get to that in a moment. Prepackaged ice cream requires coldest temperature -19 degree Celsius. A great freezer for that type of ice cream is called cold plate (Nelson cold plate) A Ohio company willing to ship anywhere in the world. Prices $3000.00 and up. Now soft serve machine is not a bad way to go... however, the equipment is very costly brand new $15 to 20 thousand used equipment $3 to 5 grand brand name (Taylor Twist) soft serve require daily maintenance or once a week depending on which machine you buy..

Cold plate freezers no maintenance just plug it in when you get it for two days, and get the temperature up to to -19 you are ready to go. However, It will stay cold 10 hr or more, once you are done for the day you must plug it in at night.

lastly license and permit various from state to state and country to country always start with your health department, and your local city clerk... Different brands of ice cream in area good humor blue bunny ms fields and so on.. well looks like I written a novel on selling ice cream lol. ouluakim@yahoo.com

Riley McClendon. Thank you for that great information for starting a ice cream truck. We are planning on starting our business in two years. I am doing all my research starting now. I would like to know how do I need a special battery installed for the freezers. Do u have the name of the company in Ohio that sells the freezers. I appreciate any information you have to offer me. Great success with your business !
