Starting an Elderly Care Business
In the year 2020, it is projected that almost seven million people in the United States will be reaching the age over 85.
Looking back to the figures of 1970, this is five times more than that.
Because of this, together with the modern phenomenon of two-earner households with hectic working schedules, the need for services that will take care of our grandparents has significantly increased into percentages we did not see coming.
With the circumstances mentioned above, the question now is, “Where will all these aging and aged members of the population live?” Approximately 85% of them would still want to live at their own homes, may be together with their families. However, doing so, many of them would already entail help and assistance in carrying out activities of daily living. Although many adult and gainfully employed children would want to take care of their elders themselves, they are often already living in another state or city. Others have jobs that will no longer permit them to take another task in their plate. Some are already parenting and raising their own children and families.
With the imminent increase in the aging population together with the present condition of the American family, day and elderly care businesses come in. This is where services from medical caregivers and as well as nurses come to the rescue of the plight of this aged population. They provide assistance to the elderly in the implementation of their activities of daily living such as cleaning, cooking, grocery shopping, paying of pills, self care, grooming, medication reminders, errands and even driving them to medical appointments. Moreover, they also take in charge with the provision of companions. This is especially valued and esteemed by many widowed and single elders.
Starting an elderly care business may be difficult for you if you do not like people interaction and you do not have the compassion for elders and the aging population. It entails patience and dedication.
So, what are needed in starting an elderly care business? Below will give you an overview of what may be helpful:
- To provide services in your elderly care business, you will be required to be bonded. For your transportation services, you will need a liability insurance. However, if you chose to franchise an elderly care business, chances are high that you’ll gain the insurance as well as the bond from your franchisor.
- You need to be friendly and accommodating, because chances are high that you will get clients mostly through referrals. In this sense, it is wise if you will be able to develop harmonious relationships with hospital discharge planners, doctors and social agencies who have constant interaction and contacts with the elderly.
- If you wish to go beyond the basic elderly care, you may consider the following:
Geriatric care management. This has a requirement of a professional degree in nursing, social work, psychology, gerontology or in any other allied medical field.
Home health care. You should be able to administer medications, monitor vital signs, provide range of motion exercises, be able to lift and bathe elderly patients in the comfort of their homes.
