Spelling bees are famous in schools. They are part of most children's educational learning. But spelling bees are not only for children.

Some adults also hold spelling bees to keep them sharp. In addition, spelling bees are also excellent ways to raise funds.

Are you planning to organize a spelling bee as part of a school activity or as a fundraising event? Here are some practical things to think about:

Venue for a Spelling Bee

If the event is part of a school activity, then this is not a problem for you. But if you are an organization without an activity center to do such an activity, then you have to seriously think about where to hold the event. To save on cash, you could think about venues you could get for free – for example, a state school gymnasium, a community center, or a public library.

Sponsors for a Spelling Bee

Any activity would require money to fuel its organization. You can approach local businesses to be your sponsors. Or, if you are an organization trying to develop a spelling competition, you can also tap people and institutions that support you or have some connection to you and your cause. Some businesses and organizations sponsor annual spelling bees. The Scripps-Howard newspaper chain, for instance, sponsors the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Planning for a Spelling Bee

The planning for a spelling bee should be thorough. It should include the pre-event and post-event preparations. The pre-event preparations include getting sponsors and advertising the event to the community through various means such as fliers, newspapers, radio, and school or community bulletin. You also have to think about the following:

The age requirement of the participants
The mechanics of the registration and registration fee (if there should be any)
Study materials if you plan to provide one
Official word list for the participants
Official word list copy with pronunciation guides and sample usage in sentences
Seating arrangements
Name tags (optional)
Official rules and rules of appeal
A panel of Judges. Local celebrities are good choices.
Pronouncers and emcees
Prizes for the winners as well as certificates
Sound system
Chairs
Whether the contest is written or oral or a combination

Post-event preparation includes preparations for sending winners to higher-level competitions like the National Spelling Bee in Washington.
