US Govt Looking to extend Unemployment and Health Benefits of Laid-off Workers

The Obama-administration has bared plans to provide more lift to unemployed workers by extending their unemployment claims and health care benefits.

White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers said that these will be part of the second stimulus package that the government will offer to the Americans in order for them to bounce back from the recession.

White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers over the weekend said that President Barack Obama’s administration is considering a possible extension of the health care benefits and unemployment claims to hundreds of thousands laid-off workers in the United States.

Summers said that the move was part of the overall economic stimulus package given to people greatly affected by the recession. He added that it will be very helpful to the jobless as the labor sector continues to slash down its workforce in the wake of the recession.

The presidential economic adviser said that the Obama has fallen short of the declaring another stimulus package to further augment the effect of the first $787 billion stimulus program.

Summers said that other programs that the administration were pushing are the enhanced unemployment insurance, tax credit for COBRA healthcare holders, first time home buyers, and other stimulus package that are moving to final discussions.

The adviser revealed that the Obama administration has already discussed these options to the members of Congress. However, Summers refused to give the details of the said talk.

Obama earlier said that overhauling the healthcare program of the employees would be a huge difference in the current state of the job market, saying that these can even create more job opportunities for embattled Americans.
