Volkswagen Bares Plans to Build First Electric Car By 2013

Volkswagen sees future production of all-electric vehicles by 2013 as plans to make the new small family vehicle units was bared last Friday by company executive.

The German automakers hope to have 1.0 to 1.5 percent shares of the world all-electric vehicle market.

 An executive of German automaker, Volkswagen, on Friday revealed plans to produce the company’s first all-electric vehicle by 2013. The automobile company also said with the next 10 years after first production rollout, they will come up with bigger, larger quantity production of all-electric, environment-friendly cars.

In his speech, VW head Martin Winterkorn said that they plan to replace their small family line cars, which runs in gasoline or diesel, with more environment-friendly all-electric vehicles by 2013.

He added that these all-electric vehicles will be sold at very affordable prices depending on the customers expectations. He said that plans over the next 10 years after the first rollout is to continue doing this kind of cars and have at least 1.0 to 1.5 shares in the electric vehicle market.

To date, Japanese automaker Toyota remains the leader in the said market. But VW hope to beat its sale by 2020 when full production is at place.

German car manufacturers are now shifting to more environment-friendly vehicles following the success of electric vehicles in 2009. Records showed that the market for these vehicles registered 0.2 percent increase in sales. Some 6, 500 units have been sold.

On May, VW signed an agreement with China-base BYD for the production of hybrid and electric cars. Toshiba will develop the engines for the said cars.
