Worst Cities for Business
According to a research study by Joel Kotkin (urban futures presidential fellow at Chapman University) and Michael Shires (public policy associate professor at Pepperdine University), Ohio and Michigan are the worst cities to look for a job or put up your business.
The worst cities to establish your business have been named.
For the past five years, Joel Kotkin (urban futures presidential fellow at Chapman University) and Michael Shires (public policy associate professor at Pepperdine University) have been compiling a researched list of good places to do business. This list is primarily based on job growth across the U.S.
Now, they’re examining the bottom cities of this list. And most of the nation’s perennial losers are located in two states: Michigan and Ohio. In fact, 11 out of 16 regions belong to these states. The bottom four cities are Detroit, Flint, Jackson, and Saginaw.
Since Michigan is the home base for most automakers, and President Obama is determined to give them a rougher treatment compared to financial companies, this could be one of the factors that contributed to the state’s problems. Moreover, environmental regulations are pounding on auto production for its carbon-spewing and unacceptable greenhouse gas emission levels.
Ohio, on the other hand, has a tax burden similar to Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, and New York. However, these cities are high-income states, and the residents of Ohio do not enjoy that affluence.
Aside from the above concerns, these locations remain inhospitable to business. Sure, housing can be cheap; however, running your business may be surprisingly expensive to do.
The study has been based on job growth spanning 333 regions. Their data came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics called Metropolitan Statistical Areas. According to the authors, their analysis did not only look at the job growth for the past year, but it also considered how employment figures have evolved since 1996.
