If you are a great designer the obvious next step is to work for a company. Then you will see the ins and outs. If you manufacture in China, you may want $100k to $500. And it is at high risk! If you don't know about import, tariffs, warehousing, negotiation and handling your sales just go work for someone else.

Hi, Shoe business is a tough business. It requires great deal of efforts, research and travel and involves lot of money (for product, freight, sampling cost, sales-set up). Yet, if you are having commercial products, there is no business as shoe business. Just for an overview, shoe as a product, involves more than 250 processes for making from scratch. It’s a technical product and use of machines have only made the process easy and fact, yet it involves lot of people and great deal of knowledge to engineer a pair of comfortable (the basic property to make it sale-able) As a business, there are below, some cost effective models you can choose as per your flair: 1. Designing: Freelance designing is always an option for creative people. Just be sure your models are practical (for bulk production) and comfortable (as shoes does not only cover your foot and protect them, they bear weight of your entire body). You can contact some fashion stores or manufacturing units and offer them your creative services. Try to do a course in footwear technology, a short term or crash course perhaps will be helpful to understand shoes. Shoe designing is more of a science than art. 2. Import & Wholesale: It involves cost to buy product, place them at your warehouse etc and time from ordering and wait for it to sold. You can wholesale either as stockiest (stock first and sale later) or on pre-order basis (first collect order from your clients and later deliver them with the product). As I mentioned, this job is not price competitive but if you are able to find a manufacturer with low MOQ e.g. 80 to 120 prs (min order quantities), this can work. 3. Working as commission agent for a manufacturer: Easiest way to do business at ease. If you have a known market(native countries) and know what can be sold best there, you can find a manufacture for your goods, send them specification-your market research etc to ensure they make samples which sale good ( never compromise on samples, they are your first impression and key for shoe business). For this you require to choose a faithful partner and this business starts with "trust" as seed investment. 4. Working as Sourcer for a retailer/retail: Chain/shop/wholesaler/private-label: If you have good contacts in a company which is flexible in the channels they source products, this can be a good business. All you need is good links in factories and know what your client requires. 5. Working as representative for a foreign sourcing agency: Sourcing agents are specialized in sourcing particular merchandise. So sourcing agents of footwear knows which product can be sourced from where at reasonable prices. They take care of quality and work as buyer's own office in India. When you represent a sourcing agency, you have opportunity to work as bridge between customer and sourcing agency. All communications are routed through you and you get support regarding product enquiry / factory / prices /sample etc everything over your laptop without visiting the factories! All you have to do is, find potential clients, appoint a meeting with them, get their product requirement and float it to your sourcing agent HQ. These are some of the works in footwear industry that might won’t cost you lot of money, yet require time and effort investment along with professional attitude. Some of the tips, I would like to share for people who look forward to work in this industry are: 1. Give and take second chances. With shoes, you cannot promise for everything perfect in first go. 2. Trust: It will always grow with time, but you will always have to start from somewhere. 3. Use skype to meet people overseas for potential business before working on samples/ visiting factories. You can make yourself 80% sure to move or not to move ahead with a face to face interaction. 4. Be particular about what is your thing, make a small target, try and widen it only if you have tried enough. E.g. if you start with kids footwear, try only them till you have results. Don’t switch to mens then ladies then sneakers, then sports quickly. 5. Beware of people but don’t judge them from your past experience or words you heard from people about their country. See things from your eyes. Every buyer and every seller is unique. I went to shoe school for doing a three year diploma in footwear technology and have been working in industry for more than 5yrs.
