How to Start a Crawfish Farm

Are you a fish hobbyist who entirely spent your childhood days in catching a crawfish? Then you may know everything about it. Now that you are a grown-up, you cannot just consider catching a crawfish a past time. In fact, this can be a very profitable business which you can venture into.

Since you already have know-how about them, building a crawfish farm can just be a very easy one.

Before you begin your crawfish farm and earn lots of money, of course you need to have several considerations. The very first thing that you need to do is create a business plan that will set everything on a step by step flow. You must also estimate the capital which you need in order for you to get started in this type of business.

Starting a Crawfish Farm

Today, most of the crawfish farmers make use of rice in doubling their crop. A natural pond bed for your crawfish can be a very ideal one for you. But you must know that natural pond bends are hard to find because they only come in few numbers so, if you are not able to find one, you have no choice but to create an artificial one.

After all the necessary tools and materials for the pond, you must proceed in the pond construction. In order for you to be successful in this venture, you must also decide on what tactics to use in the construction process. To drain and flood of water easily, the pond bed must be located in a flat area. For this reason, rice fields can also be a very ideal place for a pond bed. You must also take into consideration the amount of clay loams in the field so that the crawfish burrows will be supported.

Water is also a very important element in the crawfish farming because it is all about water manipulation. So, be sure to locate your pond bed where there is enough supply of water because flooding the field will pave the way for the growth of the crawfish while draining it will cause it to reproduce.

Having enough water is not just enough in the crawfish farming because you also need to control its quality. Just like keeping up a fish tank, you also need to watch the following qualities in the water system: water hardness, ammonia levels and pH levels as well. So, if your water system has a high quality, you can also produce a better crop of the crawfish.

You must also supervise your pond bed to know the things to improve. Springtime is the best season for you to stock the adult crawfish. To facilitate more reproduction, the field must also be drained from June to August. When September comes, the field must be re-flood.

Im a chef from St. Thomas , originally from the states and an evacuee from Katrina. I've been down here for 7 years and have opened 7 restaurants as a consultant and I totally represent southern French cooking. Crawfish down here don't happen really at all. All the crawfish down here are precooked Chinese crawfish and a real let down. There's is an untapped market for them down here in the virgin islands. My question is . Is it possible to raise crawfish in a tank or a pool and set up a tiered system within for proper rotation??

I own five acres of sandy/silty land with low clay content in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. I'm considering the practicality/profitability of constructing an underground fish ranch using large diameter PVC irrigation pipe; surrounded by rebar and concrete. Tentative experimental plans involve raising tilapia, catfish, prawns, crawfish, and possibly a few saltwater species. Fish ranches are common in China, and the University of Missouri has compiled much data on aquaculture, but I've yet to see any data on doing this underground. Any suggestions, data, or ideas?
