I have receive a fair bit of inquiry on Lobster farm set up so here is a summary. before embarking this will be the few question you need to ask yourself and have some answer for.

    1. what is the required license required to operate a farm in your country.
    2. Where is the location of the farm? Survey of site and understanding the water condition in the selected area. It will also be good to know if there is any particular breed that is suitable for that area as this will minimize the money use to farm different species.
    3. Stocking of the farm there must be a consistent source for the lobster juvenile.
    4. Lobster feed, trash fish and shell fish supply must be consistent.
    5. Construction and Operating cost. The initial setup is a lot unless you can buy over an existing farm. Farming is labour intensive so workers are crucial.

If you have most of the answers for the question above you will be in the right direction to starting your own lobster farm. Regards Desmond Tan - www.kzfishery.com.sg

This is Kathy from Singapore. I am thinking of going into lobster farming as a social enterprise. Basically setting up lobster farms in coastal villages in Indonesia and Philippines where fishermen have to go out to the oceans to find for sharks so thought of helping them set up lobster farms in their villages as alternative livelihood. Need details on start up capital and prices etc please, thank you!

Starting a Lobster farm there are basically two method first is using land base where lobsters are kept in concrete pond. Pro of this is steady electricity supply and easy monitoring of lobster growth. Cons of using this method as lobster feed on fish the water aid be dirty easily hence a good filtration system is required that would require a huge investment on filtration system. The other method is to farm lobster in sea cage. Pro of this method is it is a proven way of lobster cultivation. Cons subjected to water conditions as well as intensive lobour required to maintain net cleaning.

Something else to think of when you plan to embark on lobster farming if lobsters can be bred as easily as for example prawn or Tilapia will lobster still be sold as a premium seafood. Backyard kind or hobby of farming will not be suitable for lobster framing.

San Antonio, TExas; United states. Would it be ideal to begin a "TRIAL SIZE LOBSTER FARM,"before embarking on a crazy large farm. and what size would you recommend? What type would you recommend.? I saw a reply about Spiny Lobsters...But how good are they in comparison to those that are of Maine that are not like rubber when marketing? My son and I are actually looking to start this up together and/or shrimp farming.

Hi Everyone, In this field of research and findings, not many people are able to raise lobsters to it's full length. Out of 50,000 frys maybe only potential 2 will grow to its maximum length. Lobster farms need to cultivate for many cycles and years of hard work to make it happen. Eg, areas suitability, irrigation source, food source, species of lobsters, demand and supply. In Singapore, I have done many research and experiments on my country local sea water. Temperature of water plays a big part on rearing this creatures. Water sanity can also be of high issue. To my experience for more then 10 years I have been trying on how to make it work on a short Time frame. I have succeed in having a potential business plan and procedures on how to run and manage a lobster farm. Interested parties from all over the world, if you seek help and would like to know more about lobster farming, feel free to contact me @ my email Sebastian_kimaova@live.com. Thank you. • Omar ahmed said on August 27, 2012
Hello there, I have already done a bit of ground work on spiny lobsters on my island in lamu, Kenya. Ui designed a few tanks that acted as outgrow pens. Tank one had baby lobsters that were around 200-500 grams and another had pregnant lobsters. I fed the baby lobsters with crabs that I picked from shores at night. Kids helped to collect, kill and drop them off in the tanks. There was plenty if cheaply available feed. The tanks had a water inlet pipe. Excess water was discharged via an outlet pipe. The lobsters grew quite rapidly. I managed to grow 200 lobsters from the 300 or so that I started with in tank 1 in less than 6 months. Tank two with the pregnant lobsters was the more interesting one. Did you know that the lobsters start out as microscopic creatures. I lost most of the babies because I thought the water was dirty. When I later learnt that the 'blackening' of the water. So I shut down tank two. It's virtually impossible to grow microscopic lobsters is what I thought. But alas a new idea had come up. My island is very tiny (about 50 acreas or so. I want to convert it into a floating mega farm of lobsters, build a coral wall around (coral stones are readily available) and have a 'natural' self-filtrating outgrow pen. It will be like a humongous pool with millions of lobsters of different sizes and types. This is certainly a huge operation and I will definitely involve the local community to make it happen. Anyone interested in this investment plan I have is most welcome. I come from a village called kizingitini and for those who know of this place will tell you that the best lobsters (and honey) come from this area. I am looking for serious investors who believe that this great chance and opportunity should be looked into. A lot of money will be needed but I can't express how great the profit margins will be. A pregnant lobster produces millions of baby lobsters and juvenile lobsters are found in plenty; both of which ate illegal to sell by the fishermen so they simply throw them back to the sea. If we can tap into this market and create a controlled natural farm we won't have to worry about carbibalism or filtration or feeding the lobsters or diseases...a huge natural farm can easily be managed rather than small cages. Also we can have floating restaurant that provide fresh lobster right from the outgrow pen. If you can see the great potential in this business as I do, please don't hesitate to call me Omar Ahmed +254722333003. Other great farming opportunities and ideas also available for Pate island, soon to be the corridor of Africa (as the last emperor of china said before he died here many years ago). Sorry for the long post :)

If you decide to buy Lobster Fingerlings, please take note about various country rules regarding export of fingerlings. Countries like India, Sri Lanka, Bangadesh, Vietnam cannot legally export lobsters less than 300gram. So just take the necessary precautions before you part with your money.

As to regards to investment into lobster farm, till today there is no one that has been successful in cultivating lobster from eggs to full grown. There has been many trials on this including investment by Australia government and the investment is in millions of dollars from what I know the project has ended. The main reason why this is not successful is because of the feed, lobsters require at different stage of their growth this is something that no one is able to figure out.

Before you invest in lobster hatchery you may want to have proof of the success. As till today lobsters are still caught from the wild and kept in sea cage to sale size. This is the fact.

@Desmond Tan, might like to contact CSIRO in Cairns Australia, as the science and technology has been discovered on how to breed the spiny lobster in captivity. And it has been available for around a year now. I am actually looking for investors at the moment to set up.
  • Desmond beginner adviser said on October 16, 2012
@Thomas I went to CSIRO website and have done some reading and have also just sent them an email regarding obtaining the information on breeding Spiny lobster. But at this moment all i can find is Australia's Spiny Freshwater Crayfish which is not LOBSTER. The main research they are doing on Lobster is as follows:
"Demography, fishery yield and potential management strategies of painted spiny lobster ( Panulirus versicolor) at Northwest Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. ... The aim is to quantify demographic parameters and yield of painted spiny lobster."
This is not breeding in captivity. Maybe you can point us to the document on the research.

I think there has been many request on information regarding backyard set-up for lobsters below is a summary of questions and answers.

Qns :Is it possible to have a small scale backyard set-up?
Ans: It is possible but the investment to set up the purification system will be huge, reason is very simple lobsters only consume things like fish and shell fish hence the water will be extremely dirty after each feeding session.

Qns: I have huge land space can I use it?
Ans: Yes you can and basically you will need to invest in filtration system and since it is on land you will constantly need to retrieve sea-water which in the long run may be a big investment.

Hope this helps answer any questions to regards to Backyard Lobster farming.
One more thing to take note before you rush into investing on a Lobster farm always make sure you visit the farm and know for sure they are actually farming lobsters.

Hi guys, lobster farming is lots of hard work. one would want to stop and think his or her investment wisely .lobsters are born microscopic size meaning humans may wait a long time before even knowing they are there. Lobsters grow rapidly in the wild reason being the high and low tide bring the right type of foods to them as they grow.also in the wild the are not restricted to any small space which in return gives them the freedom to grow.it is not impossible to start a lobster farm but does 1 have the time or the money to test his or her beliefs .i say beliefs reason being studies show no 1 has done or built a lobster farm successfully . I believe I would have to build a farm almost as perfect as a shore line with in and out going tides with lots of rocks , to basically copy the natural environment were they breed in peace .a prawn farm maybe a better option to invest in and get a quick turn over and at least we know that's be tried and tested.please email me should 1 need help

    Thank you for your queries.
This is to help answer some of the questions asked, recently.

    1. Is it possible to grow lobsters from egg stage?
Ans : The challenge is where in the first place are you going to get the eggs, getting a mature female to release its eggs in a controlled environment itself is a big challenge. Next getting the right feed for the larva stage to till the lobsters have colour shell is something no one is able to figure out.

    2. Is it possible to have a small scale backyard set-up?
Ans: It is possible but the investment to set up the purification system will be huge, reason is very simple lobsters only consume things like fish and shell fish hence the water will be extremely dirty after each feeding session.

    3. Where to get Lobster Fingerlings?
Ans: Before you go rushing into searching for suppliers from the internet and transferring money before you see anything things to take note. You need to understand what kind of lobsters are suitable to be cultivated in your country after which always get proof from the suppliers of their credibility they should have registered company and track record which they should be open to share. A visit to the suppliers farm or operations who be most ideal.

    3. What is the investment for setting up a farm?
Ans : It will depend on your local country supply cost for the following items: Lobster Fingerlings, Timber, Nets, Labour etc..

    4. What is the returns for Lobster Farming?
Ans : The key is to ensure that you are able to keep the cost low, things like Trash Fish, Labour cost, Farm maintenance cost etc.. LOBSTERS DONT EAT PELLET.

Feel free to ask anything else that you have in mind, there isn't any question that is silly especially before you invest. But in any farming investment High risk will have high returns.

Hi, I have a fishery of two hector addressed in India; west Bengal(state); 24 parganas north (district). The details scenario of the fishery is; we harvest the river water by drainage system. The water is not too much salted like river water but salted; width of water level is 4 feet( 30% of the fishery) and 2 feet(70% of the fishery). The land is rice cultivation land and normally we firm white fish(maximum); prawn; lobster; tilapia etc together. I saw it is not sufficient profitable( maximum 40% margin). I want to firm lobster fully. So please give me the advice that what kind of lobster; pin lobster or fingerling size need to firm and how much and from where? What food will be feed and how to fidding. Normally we gate 50 to 100 gm each lobster by 7 month from pin size. We have scope to refresh water after 14 days by the river cattle. Please solve my problem.
