Smartphone Sales Remain Strong Amid Financial Crisis

According to IT research company Gartner, smartphone sales in the second quarter increased by 12.7 percent to nearly 36 million devices sold around the world despite that the overall sales of mobile phones has dropped 9.4 percent or 296 million units.

Meanwhile, Apple iPhone and Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry are the two best-selling smartphones worldwide.

Despite low consumer spending and weak economy, smartphone sales remain strong as companies reported an increase in revenue during the second quarter—an impressive outcome since most electronic devices such as computers and conventional mobile phones reported slumping sales.


According to IT research company Gartner, smartphone sales in the second quarter increased by 12.7 percent to nearly 36 million devices sold around the world. Meanwhile, overall sales of mobile phones has dropped 9.4 percent or 296 million units.


In its report, Gartner said that smartphone sales accounted for 13.5 percent of the units sold worldwide compared to 11 percent last year.


Meanwhile, the IT research firm said Apple iPhone and Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry phones are the two best-selling smartphones worldwide with its unprecedented popularity among mobile consumers who are preferring Internet-enabled phones over conventional units which only provides simple messaging and communication.


Gartner also said that aggressive marketing and the release of signature smartphones have contributed to the rising popularity and strong sales of the said devices.


The research firm also attributed the success of this Internet-enabled phones to the advancement in mobile operating systems which are becoming more interactive and user-friendly.
