Starting a Clementine Orchard

Clementines are a variety of mandarin oranges which are first discovered in the orphanage’s garden, by the late father Clement Rodier. These fruits usually grow from the month of November until February, as they are commonly known as Christmas oranges.

Many farmers are interested in growing Clementines due to the help they bring to them.

Some farmers are not yet familiar with starting a Clementine orchard. In this article, they can learn the tips in growing Clementines to the best of their efforts. Once they have followed the tips, they can expect a good production of Clementines.

Preparing a Well-Drained Soil

One of the few steps in starting a Clementine orchard is preparing a well-drained soil. Oxygen is its essential element which is as important as water in healthy plants. Remember that a soil which is water-logged is deficient in oxygen and does not sap well, as it often results to rotted and drowned roots. In order to allow more oxygen from getting inside the plant roots, improving the drainage is as well advised. It will take more heat to be able to warm up the water than the soil, so better count on the planting season if the soil you have is not water-logged.

Identifying the types of native soil is also important because a well-drainage soil is dependent on the entire make-up of the soil in the orchard. Better yet, improve and enrich the native soils by digging in compost. To better improve drainage and air penetration in clay, compost must also be added. Apart from it, fertilizers should be mixed with the soil to turn the native soil into a well-drained one. However, avoid putting too much compost, and the topsoil should not be mixed with the existing soil.

Demarcating Spots for Planting Clementines

Once you have prepared a well-drainage soil, next is to demarcate spots for planting clementines. The grafts should be planted in proportionate distance of about ten feet within a single row. In either side of the row, you must leave fifteen feet space to allow them to grow with enough space.

Segregation in clementines is necessary enabling them to grow abundantly. Actually, most of the plants should be separated for them to extract the nutrients enough to fulfill their optimum needs. As a result, each of the clementines will grow abundantly great for commercial cultivation. On the other hand, prune the clementines in the entire year for their uniformed heights.

Preparing Water Irrigation

Aside from demarcating the clementines, preparing water irrigation also has to play its essential role. Ideally, irrigation is made through drip irrigation, which is what most of the experts advise. Apart from it, it is advised that the annual requirement for water ranges from thirty-five to forty inches.

Providing Liquid Fertilizers

To complete the steps in starting a Clementine orchard, providing liquid fertilizers is also recommended. During the entire growing season of clementines, liquid fertilizers should be sprinkled, especially since the feeding requirement is on the higher side. The fertilizer should be proportionately provided at 12-4-4, or even once every interval during the seven weeks. On the other hand, the proportion of fertilizer can be reduced by up to two-thirds during the fall season.
