I am interested in starting a home health agency in Ga. I wanted to find out what type of license are required? What type of insurance is required? How do you get a Medicaid provider number? What are the state of Ga rules, requirements and regulations?
  • John Rowsell beginner adviser said on March 7, 2012
@Jamessia the State of GA has specific rules and regulations on opening a home care company. In GA they are licensed as Private Home Care Providers. I would be happy to discuss with you all the requirements needed to get your business started. Please email me at jrowsell@ahcglobal.com or call me at 877-244-2300. We are extremely experienced at starting people off in their own business.

I would like to start a my own business in the State of Oklahma for In home companionship. I don't currently have the money I need to start it up so, my question is, would it be possible to have clients sign a waiver for the time being. I took care of my elderly parent's, my dad for approximately six months before he died and, my mother approximately 9 years. My mom had dementia, and was a stroke victim. The waiver would be that of I am not certified. Although very shortly I will be bonded.

Hi Debra! Liquid capital investment should run around the $60,000 ball park. However, for Medicare certification, you will be asked to have contingency funding that in Texas should run around the $80,000-$100,000 ball park. It is a 2 step process in Texas #1 is State licensure and then is Medicare/Medicaid certification with Accreditation process. However, if funding is an issue, you can go ahead and start with a non-medical company such as a PAS licensure. This is a home health license that will only work with home health aides and go from there. Feel free to give me a call 305-492-5308 and ask for Lilian.

I own two Home Health agencies in Miami, Fl. I am looking to expand and start opening home health agencies all over the states. I do have the capital to invest, that’s not a problem, I just need the patients referral source. I'm looking for someone in the medical industry- it could be a doctor, a discharge planner at a hospital or just someone who has contacts with hospitals, doctors, case managers and social workers who can refer patients to the home health agency. I'm willing to go 50-50 split with the right person. If you think you are the right person, please e-mail me at loverpipo@hotmail.com. thank you

Hi everyone who are in the process of wanting to open their own home Care agency. I worked for one in nj and I am not starting my own in Colorado. It's not as hard as you think!! You have a few options of doing it : you an either go through a franchise or start your own. The advantage of starting your own and not through franchise, is that you won't be limited to just a certain area, no expensive franchise fees, you set your own rules etc. The advantage of starting one with a Franchise, is that you get training, support, all materials needed etc. Franchises are overrated and expensive if you ask me... And as far as marketing goes, that is your number 1 priority. You just have to go to hospitals, see social workers and introduce yourself. Also go to rehabs, physical therapists and doctors. The first thing that you should do before getting any clients, is to get the best caregivers ! Ones that truly care and are compassionate. If you do that , it will save you an enormous amount of trouble . As far as information on how to start, handbooks etc, just go online and look. All the info is there, there are companies that provide every document to you and it costs very little. Good luck to everyone!

Good afternoon, we are 3 RNs starting a home healthcare agency in Flint, MI. We also have a medical biller/office assistant. The four of us plan to work the business without pay until we are certified. We just signed a lease on an office location and we have client referrals ready to be seen through word of mouth. Our office is completely furnished, we have ordered marketing materials, and feel we are well on our way. We hope to start seeing patients within two weeks. I have just sent off our CMS 855a application and we are going to seek JACHO accreditation which looks like it will cost about $5000. We estimated our medicare contingency funding requirement to be around $10000., is that being unrealistic? What else will the contingency fee cover? also we plan to do RN duties as well as HHA and CNA duties until we are certified. Thank you!

  • Lilian Bello expert adviser said on December 28, 2012
@Marchelle @Minorva @Mary Starting a home health agency is not an easy task. Your business, just like any other you start, will require a lot of marketing skills, a lot of connections with people you may know in the industry, and you will need to find a way to set your company apart from the rest of your competition. These are just general business principles. Now, when it comes to home health agencies, just like any other type of health care business, you need to become aware that you will not only need to be an efficient business when it comes to providing services to your clients, but most importantly, you need to remain compliant with all the rules and regulations that govern the industry which includes state, federal and accreditation rules and regs. Having said this, you need to have policies and procedures that address the above mentioned rules and regs, forms that comply with the established policies and procedures, and detailed supervision of staff to ensure they are following the established policies and procedures. Your agency can be the best agency when it comes to services provided, but if administration-wise the agency is lacking, it will be cited and possibly shut down. I have seen this happen many times. The Joint Commission surveyors have told me in many surveys that nurses tend to be the worst home health agency owners, because they worry so much about the services they are providing that they tend to forget the legal/administrative part of the business. So, please remember to maintain both aspects of the business and you will be successful.

@Marchelle, @Minorva, @Mary, @Seppy. Hi! Thank you so much for your comment. I just read it. Well, first of all, you can try to find private investors that are willing to put up the money and allow you to run the business and provide them with their cut of the profits. We can arrange agreements in situations like those. Also, the SBA offers start-up loans for individuals interested in starting their own business, however, you need to have a clear, detailed business plan which includes start-up costs, possible return on investments, etc. Lastly, you might be able to check with your city as cities usually offer grants as incentives to individuals that want to start their own businesses. Once you have the funding figured out, you can look into city licensing, possible state licensing, and finally Medicare/Medicaid certifications. You may be able to operate the agency from your residential address, which cuts down on your initial investment. Hopefully this helps you begin your journey. I do look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hello All, I am not a consultant or a business owner. I am currently an operations manager of a home health agency that has 3 locations in the East Coast area. I have been in the home health care services for 11 years (I am 31 years old) and has some pretty good idea how to start, run and maintain your home health business. I can help those of you who have questions, guidance and such. From getting your Tax ID, business and state license, medicare license and if you want to push through with accreditation (i.e., JCAHO) then I can help you with that as well. Again, I am not a consulting company. So, I will NOT ask you for boat loads of cash. What I offer is help for those who need them. Anybody interested, email me at christide95@gmail.com.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE START-UP FOR A HOME CARE AGENCY IN NEW JERSEY OR CALIFORNIA? IS IT TRUE THAT FEE IS ONLY $5.00 IN NEW JERSEY?
  • Lilian Bello expert adviser said on March 25, 2013

@BEXLEY, Hi, none of those states' license cost $5.00. For New Jersey, there is a moratorium with home health agencies. If interested in help for the California license, feel free to call us for more information.

@christiana brefo, You will need to ask yourself first exactly what type of home care agency you want to be. That would be your very first step. There are a lot of different type of home care agencies, so getting that out of the way is your first step. Everything will be easy.
