Could you send me the facts of the soil requirements ie chemical(average) ph, normal temperature of soil, soil dampness.     I'm from New York, upstate, and I own a small piece of farming land, about two hundred acres. I belong to a well educated farming family from Pakistan. I immigrated to USA in 1972. I have been growing all kinds of produce, including potatoes, here in New York, from my back yard garden to my small farm, for our domestic use and to share with friends. Now that I'm closer to my retirement I want to grow produce on a commercial scale to supplement my income. I have selected potatoes and onions to grow on commercial scale. I have experimented with these two crops and they do very well in this soil and weather. So far I have done it old fashion way, with my own bare hands. But, for commercial scale I need equipment. Can you suggest where I can find used or new potato planters, cutters and diggers for small scale farming without costing me arm and a leg? Irfan

For sometime I was growing potatoes with ill advice from many who purported to know. I then attended a course organized through Gwebi College co hosted by Windmill and Potato Seed Association. I urge all in Zimbabwe who are interested in growing potatoes the right way to contact Gwebi College, Windmill or The Potato Seed Association of Zimbabwe. All information and material you require will be provided plus you will involved in the practicals. Growing potatoes will assist towards addressing hunger and malnutrition in Zimbabwe and the region.     @leofy fungai, For a draft proposal, please e-mail me and I will send by way of reply. But Nyanga is a Quarantine area used to produce the bulk of the certified seed we have in Zimbabwe. You might need to consult the Crop Research Institute on the legalities of it.

    @Dzidzo Marangwanda, Generally, all things being equal, a hectare of potatoes will cost you $4,000 in inputs max and return a profit of around $10,000 - $11,000/ha. This is assuming you will be selling in 15kg pockets at $8/pocket.

    @Nkosana Khumalo Soil needs to be tested, visual analysis cannot tell you about nematodes (which will drastically reduce yields) and the lacking nutrients. In some instances you'll need high potash content (applied as top dressing at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after emergence)
