I'm in the middle of just voluntarily being roadside during the summer. I don't do it full time and don't bother to compete. If i can help i can help. even during the winter I do checks in surrounding areas and rural area, towing people out of ditches , jump starting gas refill etc. Sometimes i get radio in from other towers for assist. I'm planning on possibly making it more of a serious thing...yet i have another job i need to keep..any ideas? Am i useless doing this part time or on my own time? Thoughts? Do i need special permits and licensing if i do it as a business and what type? Thanks! pdpquesne@live.ca

Let me add some info here...I have financed a startup venture, and there is some missing and incorrect info, just in this summary.
    (a) You cannot get on a police rotation without having multiple vehicles, and employees. Basically, this is not for startups. It's for companies that have proven themselves.
    (b) If you cannot afford a wrecker, or rollback, you can still get in the roadside assistance business. Go to a "state farm" agent, because you will need insurance just to "pop a lock", or deliver gas roadside, etc. This insurance can be shocking, it's dropped to $500 for our fourth year
    (d) My son does this, and can afford to do it because he lives at my home with zero expenses. There is no money here. Expenses are in the thousands, while money made per call can be counted in the tens. You cannot make some of this stuff up....when my son arrived to help some people, they were drunk, so, he could not legally help them back on the road, they jumped in his truck, and put it in the ditch.
    (e) just to "pop a lock" involves, burglary tools, so, you have to register with the state, get fingerprinted, getting tools delivered can be a trivial challenge, etc. The customers are NOT people, they are insurance companies. (Dolt), whom offer about $30 to pop a lock, jump start, change a tire, etc....and insurance for the month is $500....and your vehicle will need thousands in repairs in the course of a year.

The best way to make money, is to be an employee...not the owner.

I am currently working for a roadside asst. co. I want to branch out on my own. I realize that I don't need to buy a tow truck for this kind of work ( we don't tow and I'm making $1000 per week as it is.) What I want to know is what are the titles of the people that I need to contact in the insurance company's, so that I can get the ball rolling with them?
