Steps to Subvert Advertisements

If you want to subvert ads, you must start from within. You must be able to refuse to advertising in your day to day life. Don’t accept ads readily and instead try to study the methods that are being used to attract people to patronize certain products or brands.

Check all the things you own and get rid of the brands. This is your first step to success.

How can you subvert advertisements? The world is already saturated with media. You will find it hard to sort your desires, needs, and ideas. The influence of advertising is so great and if you want to subvert ads, you need to liberate yourself from such influence. To do it, you must resist advertising. This can be hard at first since business owners are already used to it. Start by turning off the TV when you’re at home or in the office. Advertising will surely be present anywhere you go. Instead of accepting the messages of such ads, try to analyze them.

After the analysis, you need to expose the advertising methods. Ads play with the insecurities of people and they tend to create new desires and needs. You can discuss all your findings through blogs or you can also make spoof ads just to reveal the advertising methods. Have you checked your wardrobe lately? If you see brand names and slogans, these are also forms of advertising. You can always remove the brand names and slogans so that you will not be advertising such brand names. This may seem a bad idea since you can ruin your wardrobe but if you’re determined to subvert advertising, you will be able to do this. The change should start within you. If you don’t focus on what you want, you will never be able to achieve it. Focus on your goal and that is to subvert ads. You should be determined and motivated so that you can encourage others to make the necessary changes.

Next step is to co-opt imagery or words. Legally defacing ads is impossible but you can always use art to subvert advertising. If you can convince the local community to make your place ad-free, you can also do this by gathering support from citizens. After this, you can now approach the local officials and tell them about your ideas. Every year after Thanksgiving, you can participate in the ‘Buy Nothing Day’. Don’t go shopping on this special and try to pass the day sharing ideas to other people who are also attempting to subvert advertising.

To subvert ads is not easy since people are already used to advertisements on the net, TV, radio, newspapers, and many other things. It’s already part of the daily lives of people. There is a way to do this and it should start from your own self. Follow the steps provided and you will surely be able to encourage the community to follow the same path.
