Candace and Tom Spiel will, a couple from Riverside City, is set to rebuild their old McDonald’s restaurant along University Avenue into the first ever “greenest” franchise in the West after the city planning commission has approved the modern design of their proposed building.

In a report on Sunday, the couple will soon get their “green golden arches” put up after convincing the city planning office in a two-hour debate.

The Spiels’ got a 5-2 vote from the commission.

The city planning commission has put into extensive questioning the design standards of the Spiel’s proposed building, which will replace the 1966 building they own.

The couple said that the new McDonald’s restaurant will be made from recycled materials, which are also made locally, and water-saving structures to help the environment.

An energy efficient lighting and window structures will be put in place to the new building.

The Spiels own some nine Inland McDonald’s franchises and hopes to get the new building certified by the city as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED facility.

The recognition means that the building has met the set standard in the national level when it comes to eco-rating.
