Dear Sir, Am from Malaysia. My father is going to retire and he is thinking of goat farming. It's just that we have no business experience. If you could share the example of the business plan especially in terms of investment & costing, we will have some idea whether it's profitable or not. What are the risk involved which could raise the overheads.

Have approx. 1 acre to devote to a goat farm in Statesville, North Carolina, United States of America. The land is hilly, grassy, and has a barn structure on it and previously piped water source from an in-ground well system and the well is no longer in operation and not sure how much investment would be needed to get it working again. The land is also shaded in areas with pine trees. Please advise if this is sufficient for goat farming and if so what kind of goat farming would be most suitable for this type of agriculture.

Let me introduce myself, I am Mustafa from Hyderabad working as Project Engineer in Abu Dhabi and this Goat Farming is my hobby, passion and my side business. This business is taken care by specially by my younger brother who is also an Engineer in Hyderabad.

We are showing our interested in working with you on your project, we can not only supply you Pure Line and certified quality of Osmanabadi goats @ 150 Rs / kg which can be suitable for all the Climates but you have to take special care during 1st Month. We can act as your Design and Supervision Consultant and help you to Design a sustainable and economical shed, planting various type of fodder according to season and availability of land, giving you De-worming and Vaccination Schedule, 24 x7 Service and many more service as agreed.

Here are the few advantages of Osmanabadi Breed
1- These goats are native of Osmanabad which enjoys its border with A.P; Osmanabad has similar type of climate as some parts of A.P and Karnataka. These goats are also showing a very good performance in all the state as per the survey conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kedra. We are dealing weekly 20-30 inquiries from Oman and Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain which are more than 3000 Km from Osmanabad and also from Haryana, Punjab, U.P, Rajasthan and all Southern & Central States regarding this Breed .
2- Osmanabadi goat shows a very efficient reproductive performance and resistance against diseases not only in well managed semi stall feeding system but also in severe drought conditions. As per research conducted by NARI on Osmanabadi Goats in Maharashtra, in spite of drought which occurred in 2007 and 2008, there was no drop in the productivity rate of Osmanabad goat (Nimbkar, Pawar and Chavan 2010- NATIONAL SEMINAR on Stress Management in Small Ruminant Production and Product Processing Jaipur 29-31 January 2010)
3- The age at the first kidding is around 15 months with the lactation length of around 130 days. The dressing percentage varies from 55- 60%. In favorable conditions one will breed twice a year, twinning is very common and the milk yield ranged from 700 gm to 1500 gm.
4- From 30 kg live weight, you will get 18 kg of meat. In this 12 kg loss is due to non edible part of meat like Viscera, Hide, etc.
5- The leather of osmanabadi goat is fairly of good quality and its meat is preferred by majority of the rural and urban population in southern India.
6- In the end the weight of 6 months of Kid will be 22-25 Kg in well managed farm.

I don’t have any former training or experience in goat forming. I am not sure, if my place climatic condition is suitable for goat farming. The temperatures in winter range 9-23 Celsius (48-73 Fahrenheit). Up to 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in summer. Monsoon rains usually begin in June and end in September. I would appreciate if you can kindly forward me a start up biz plan. Thank you for your kind support in advance

@Lima, your temperature is fine for goat farming but you have to look around and consult your local vets to find what breed will be best for your place. Unfortunately we don't sell or have any business plan at this time to provide you. Let me know if you have further questions.

@Afzal Qazi, well i can say you feed is the largest expenses for raising goats. Usually goats need energy, protein, vitamins, and water. Of course water is the cheapest among all at the same time protein is the most expansive. You can feed different kinds of grain like corn, barley, wheat, oats, soybean meal, etc. They won't be country side goat anymore if you feed these and they will grow faster.

Dear Sir, I would like to start a goat farm in Khotang, Nepal. please let me know for 20 goat project. how to make shed and what is the requirement of land, food and other requirement for profitable farm.
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 9, 2011
@Bhuwan Koirala, Hi Bhuwan Koirala, you do not need to make expansive and fancy shed for goat. They can adapt any weather windbreaks so natural shed is good enough for goats. I think you can build such a shed in 20,000-30,000 INR. If you plan for open sheds with 4 walls made with bamboo then you can make it under 5K. 50 sqft of area is enough for one goat. You can feed them corn, barley, wheat, oats, soybean meal, etc.

Hi, I'm from Tamil Nadu, Chennai. I'm interested in starting goat farm in around 3 - 5 acres land. Could you please suggest me in these land how many goat i can buy for running the business. I'm planning to sell more than 10000 to 15000 goats per month once i setup to sell in the local market as well as exporting the meat to foreign countries and local selling of meat. I would like to have more details of machinery required for removing goat skin rather than i have appointed few slaughter men. Kindly mail me at mashkoor78@gmail.com Expecting your early response, Thanks
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 11, 2011
@Mashkoor, Hi Mashkoor, I already mentioned about required goat space above, one goat needs 50 sqft but it depends what kind of shed you are planning, if you are thinking about open shed then you can increase the size. Machine required for slaughtering can vary, as you are planning for 10,000 to 15,000 goats then you should setup an automated one. That will take care of skin, fats, kima, etc. You can always get a smaller one but that will solve one of your problem and you will still need people to cut the meat. If you wish to know about different tools required in this business then here are some.
    Tools required for goat farming:
    • Milking- Buckets, Bowls, nipples and milk bottles for kid goats.
    • Cleaning- Cleaning utensils required for cleaning of manger, Ghameli, water storage place, spade etc.
    • Scissor for cutting hairs in tail & hind portion
    • Chaff cutter
    • Nair trimmer

Sir, I'm from Dhamapuri, TamilNadu. I would like to start goat farming. May i know how much space, money required for a small form(40 - 50 goats)
  • Raghunath expert adviser said on March 17, 2011
@Karna, Hello Karna, 50sq ft of place is good enough for one goat so you need approximately 2000-2500 sqft place for 40-50 goats. Money required is totally depending on what kind of breed you choose for your farm as goat prices vary from breed to breed still you may need about Rs.150,000-250,000. Startup cost can reduce if you have already the space and house.

@atul dubey, Hi Atul well there are lots of pros and cons of goat farming but i just wanted to know what breed of goat you want to  farm i mean you want to farm goat for milk or meat production. I must say goat farming is extremely profitable business if you will do it in the right way.

    • You need at least 50 sq ft of area for each goat.
    • If you are planning for diary goat then Surati breed is best but if you are planning for meat production then barbari, Bengali are the best breeds.
    • There are some more breeds like Jamuna pari, Beetle but if your area is rainy area then these will not suit you.
    • Goats have very few demands they can adjust with any atmosphere. They are cheaper to maintain and easily available in market.
    • They are more tolerant to hot climate.
    • The most important part is you need very less investment to start your farm.

@ Mr.Raghunath Natarajan. Though i am settled in Bangalore, i have 3 acres of Mango garden in our village by name kagan karai near thiruppathur. I want to give employment opportunity to some in our village and same time earn some money out of it. I am interested in goat farming and i saw a goat farm about 10 kms from our village by name sundarampalli where one person is running a goat farm. He is growing 40 meat goats in a shed of approximately 20 x 50. i have a clear space of about 16 x 30 feet in between mango trees and many number of such spaces are available. initially we can go for five sheds of this size and wish to know how many goats can be accommodated. we have one acre of land with water facility to grow grass to feed these goats. guide us with more information.

@N.Loganathan, we are not providing telephonic support as of now. We also don't have consulting services to provide. If you have any questions then write them here, if they are not generic then it will be answered by me or by a consultant.

I suggest you to start with one shed, 16*30 can fit 10 goats in it. You can judge how the business goes from here and increase it later. If you decide to improve your business then build some bigger houses to hold more goats in one. Each goat requires around 50 sqft.

@Saqib, You can contact Local Ngo,s, search on net farms in your region, visit Veterinary universities & doctors, training centres for Goat farming. i feel you go for local breeds as when when goat go in slaughter house, the butcher will see whether it is boer or local breed. as you are new to this business go for 15-20 local breeds and expand gradually.

@Haseeb, there are many adv and dis adv of every business but it depend upon your management skills how you do your business in order to gain profit. In 1 Acre of land you can feed 25 Goats throughout the year if you maintain it well.

for vaccination there will be schedule made by the experienced doctors, before implementing that schedule you better cross check with one more Vet Doctor.

for Goats- shed area is 14 Sqft / female goat
    Male- 20 SQft
    Kid- 4 SQq ft.

Outside Shed area with Enclosure 30 Sq ft / goat, Go for Barbar or Sirohi.

  • Syed Mustafa Hussain Razvi expert adviser said on June 6, 2011
@Pradeep, if you are looking for meat purpose go for sirohi and if you are looking for Milk Go for Jamunapari. for taking care take training at KVK Baramati or Central Institute of Research on Goats, Makdoom. You can do intensive farming- feed the Goat with fodder Maize, Jawar, Bajra, Napier, Berseem, Lucerne, Pipal, Neem and other fodders recommended by your local university and send the goat to near by open land for 3-4 hours grazing. You can more profit if your goats dont die, get twining, avoid premature death of kids, theft and minimizing the cost price.

    @Haradhan Bhai,
    1- Go for Black Bengal.
2- Take as much as land you need but remember for fodder you require 1 acre for 25 Goats round the year. for shed , 14 sqft inside + 28 sqft outside shed.
3- you need water, light, village near by to get labour, Vet Doctor near by and with in ur Budget.
    4- investment depend upon you.
5- for loan you have to make project report and submit to local bank for approval.
6- Grow fodder Maize, Jawar, Bajra, Napier, Berseem, Lucerne, Pipal, Neem and other fodders recommended by your local university.
7- Normal quality + Goats drink 2- 5 liters depend upon size.
    8- You can check there.
    9-  Check with Nabard.
    10-  for 125 goats you need 1 skilled + 1 helper.
11- contact Tata insurance or check locally.
12- profitable but risky during rainy season due to out break of diseases near by farm + risk due to carelessness of owner + doctor.

In food you can grow Maize, Jawar, Bajra, Lucerne, Napier, Para Grass, Neem, Pipal, Subabul and also give some amount of concentrate as per requirement depending upon age and sex.

For Shed it will cost you 125-150 Rs /kg depending upon your Location. You can buy from any good breeders with out any diseases after Monsoon season.
